1873 Trade Dollar

The United States Silver Trade Dollar coins were minted from 1873 to 1885.  These silver coins weigh more than the silver dollar in order to be used in commerce with East Asia particularly with China.  They are 27.22 grams, 90% silver, 10% copper, and 38.1 mm in diameter.  They were struck at the Mints in Philadelphia, San Francisco (S), and Carson City (CC).

All proof coins were struck in Philadelphia for every year however there are only 10 known for 1884 and 5 for 1885.  These weren’t recorded and didn’t surface until 1908.  More information is available at silvercoins.ag about these Trade Dollars.
