Seated Liberty Silver Half Dollar were first struck in 1839 weighing 13.36 grams.  After the California Gold Rush silver prices climbed as people began to hoarding silver.  In 1853 Congress changed the weight of four of their silver coins and the half dollar to 12.4 grams.  When the Comstock Lode started covering the United States silver needs Congress again changed the weights of silver coins and the half dollar ended up being 12.5 grams in 1873 up to 1891 when the series was replaced by the Barber design.  You can go to www.silvercoins.ag for more information on these Seated Liberty Half Dollars.
