1863 3 Cent Piece

The United States Three Cent Silver coin was minted from 1851 to 1873 and are the smallest coin the US has ever minted.  The 3 Cent Piece is 14mm in diameter.  The 3 cent silver coins from 1851 to 1853 are only 75% silver and are 0.8g.  The rest of the series (1854 to 1873) are 90% silver and 0.75g.  There are three different varieties (or types).  The first two reflect the silver composition and the third corrects strike problems with the second type.  These are great collectors pieces especially those struck during the Civil War and the Proof strikes.  More information is available at: silvercoins.ag for the 3 cent coin.
